Starting a Test Prep Business: The Complete Guide

After working as a tutor and test prep instructor for a few years, I decided I was ready to go out on my own and start my own test prep business. I had helped dozens of students prepare for big exams like the SAT, ACT, LSAT, and GRE, and gotten awesome results. I realized I had a gift for breaking down complicated concepts, calming nerves, and helping students perform to the best of their abilities on test day.

Choosing My Niche

When starting my business, I had to decide which tests to focus on. I debated between specializing in just one or two tests, like the most popular — SAT and ACT. But ultimately I decided to help students with SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, and more. I didn’t want to limit my options too much in the beginning. Down the road I may hone in on the tests I enjoy teaching the most. But for now, I’m excited to assist students with all of these major exams.

Getting Qualified

I made sure to get all the right certifications and qualifications in place before promoting my new business. I already had tutoring experience, great test scores, and an undergraduate degree. But I also invested in becoming a certified instructor through The Princeton Review. This really helped legitimize my skills and gave me more credibility with students and parents. Additionally, I shadowed a few experienced tutors and took a short course on best practices in test prep. Now I feel 100% confident in my abilities.

Branding was so important — I wanted an identity that was professional yet approachable. I enlisted a designer to create my logo, color palette, fonts, and overall aesthetic. I’m pretty proud of the name we came up with — Test Triumph Tutoring! My website clearly explains my mission, credentials, services, and what makes my approach unique. I made sure to include testimonials from early students. Strong branding is already helping me stand out from competitors in my area.

Creating Study Materials

The core of my business is providing students with phenomenal study guides, practice tests, and other prep materials. I developed some of these resources myself based on years of tutoring expertise. For topics I’m less familiar with, I licensed materials from trusted educational publishers. I’m committed to keeping all my content updated, interesting, and effective. My priority is equipping students with test-taking strategies plus thorough subject review.

Marketing My Business

There are so many ways to get the word out about my tutoring services! My marketing tactics include social media campaigns, SEO optimization, flyers, partnerships with local high schools, events, and more. I focus on connecting with my target audience — students and parents — wherever they are. Slowly but surely, my efforts are helping me build a reputation in my community and attract new students.

Tutoring Options

I offer flexible tutoring options to accommodate different schedules and learning styles. My services include private 1-on-1 sessions, small group classes, online tutoring via video chat, and in-home tutoring. My current rate is $70/hour for private tutoring.
